Visiting Berwick-upon-Tweed

Positioned in a strategic location on the border between England and Scotland, and having changed hands fourteen times, Berwick-upon-Tweed has been both victim and beneficiary of a conflict that lasted for over 300 years. In 1120, it was the richest royal burgh in Scotland, but it finally became English in 1482.

The Elizabethan Ramparts that encircle the town for just over one mile are the finest preserved fortifications of their type in Europe. Within the walls, you can visit the Guildhall, with its prison cells, and the first purpose-built barracks in England, now home to museums and art galleries.
